When is the best time to travel to Tanzania?
The best time to travel in Tanzania is June through September, although any time of year is wonderful for viewing Tanzania’s diverse wildlife. July and August are the peak travel times in Tanzania, so book your trip early! The annual wildebeest migration attracts the most visitors (mid December) when they are in the Southern Serengeti. They remain in the southern Serengeti until March. There are many animals that do not migrate and the dry season of July, August, September, and October brings these animals out to local watering holes and rivers.
What is migration?
Migration in East Africa is the movement of animals between the Serengeti National Park and the Maasai Mara National Park. Migration occurs in late May/early June when the wildebeest and zebra travel from the western Serengeti through the northern Serengeti to the Maasai Mara, crossing the Mara river. They eventually reach the Maasai Mara National Park in mid July/early August. After the short rains in November, the herds move back into the Serengeti National Park where they rest and feed through the rains until their search for better grazing leads them back north.
When is wildebeest/zebra calving season?
Wildebeest and zebra calving season is a sight to behold. This occurs in late January/mid March with thousands of them born daily. Wildebeest and zebra calving season happens most frequently in the southern Serengeti.
What is weather like in East Africa?
Tanzania is just south of the Equator and is warm almost year round. The coolest months in Tanzania are June to October (Tanzania’s winter) and the warmest months are December to March.
Do you recommend travel insurance?
New Adventure Safaris recommends travel insurance. You can find inexpensive, comprehensive travel insurance through your local travel agent or the Internet.
